US CTI Support Program Ends Term in September 2014Newsroom
The US CTI Support Program (US CTI), started in 2008 as a five-year project, is preparing to close as scheduled on September 2, 2014, after a year of extended work.
US CTI started in September 2008 as a five-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to support the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI). Under its original term, the Program was designed to end in September 2013. In August 2013, it was extended by one year to continue assisting the Jakarta-based CTI Interim Regional Secretariat (IRS) and the regional work needed to implement the CTI Regional Plan of Action (RPOA), as well as to lay the groundwork for the establishment of the permanent Regional Secretariat.
On May 23, in preparation for the Program’s closeout, a team from US CTI that included representatives from USAID and the Program Integrator, met with the IRS Chair, Prof. Sjarief Widjaja, and other officials of the IRS to officially hand over key functions that the Program has performed in support of the CTI.
Prof. Widjaja opened the meeting with an expression of congratulations and appreciation to all of CTI for the enormous achievement of ratifying the Agreement on the Establishment of the Regional Secretariat of the CTI-CFF.
“It is clear that the CTI permanent Secretariat is now established,” he noted, citing the announcement of the ratification at the 5th CTI Ministerial Meeting in May as a critical milestone in the development of the multilateral initiative. Even so, Prof. Widjaja stressed that the CTI still faces serious challenges in ensuring its sustainability and that continued support from partners remains crucial, at least in the immediate term leading up to the operationalization of the permanent secretariat.
Noting how much the CTI has achieved for such a young organization, Prof. Widjaja thanked US CTI and other partners for helping build up the initiative from a fledgling six years ago to the globally recognized multilateral partnership that it has become today.
The final issue of the US CTI Quarterly Newsletter looks back, beginning with the most recent, at some of the key highlights of US CTI. It showcases the tremendous work that the CTI Parties and Partners have accomplished, while also reminding everyone that despite the ground covered in the last six years, the CTI still has a long way to go to achieve its long-term goal of food security based on sustainable and resilient coral reefs and fisheries.
Along with this Newsletter, the US CTI website will also close shortly after the official end-date of the US CTI Program. Please keep following the CTI at its own website as the Initiative continues to grow and create long-lasting positive impact across generations in the Coral Triangle region and the world.
